Tongue Weight, Axle Placement, and Where to Put the Skid Steer: Loading a Trailer So It Doesn’t Sway

Sway is almost always a loading problem wearing a trailer problem’s clothes. The same rig that wanders at 65 with the machine parked one way will track straight with it moved eighteen inches forward, and nothing about the trailer changed. Anyone hauling equipment behind a Workhorse Trailers build should understand where the weight needs to sit relative to the axles, because that single relationship controls how the combination behaves at highway speed more than any accessory you can bolt on afterward.

What actually causes a trailer to sway?

Too little weight on the hitch, usually because too much of the load sits behind the axles. A trailer loaded that way behaves like a pendulum, and once a crosswind or a passing semi starts moving, the load keeps feeding the oscillation.

Other contributors stack on top of that. A high center of gravity, long rear overhang, soft or underinflated tires, and a worn tow vehicle suspension all make a marginal setup worse. The fix almost always starts with moving weight forward rather than adding hardware.

If sway starts while you are driving, ease off the throttle and apply the trailer brakes manually through the brake controller rather than hitting the truck brakes. Then pull over and look at where the load is sitting.

How much tongue weight do you actually need?

For a conventional bumper pull trailer, tongue weight should generally fall between 10 and 15 percent of the total loaded trailer weight. Tongue weight is the downward force the coupler puts on the hitch ball.

Gooseneck and fifth wheel trailers work differently because the connection sits over the truck’s rear axle rather than behind it. Pin weight for those is commonly targeted in the range of 15 to 25 percent of loaded trailer weight, which is part of why goosenecks feel more stable with heavy loads.

A 14,000-pound loaded bumper pull therefore wants somewhere around 1,400 to 2,100 pounds on the ball. Check that the tow vehicle’s hitch receiver, ball mount, and rear axle rating can all accept it, since the weakest of those sets the limit.

Where does the load go on the deck?

Ahead of the axle centerline, with roughly 60 percent of the cargo weight in the front half of the trailer. That distribution tends to produce tongue weight in the right range on most equipment trailers.

Axles on a well-designed trailer are positioned to make this work when loaded normally. Weight placed behind them acts on a lever, pulling tongue weight down quickly. A pallet of pavers loaded at the tail of a 20-foot deck can undo a properly positioned machine ahead of it.

Where do you put a skid steer or a mini excavator?

Heavy end forward, which requires knowing where the machine actually carries its weight. A skid steer carries most of its mass at the rear where the engine and counterweight sit, so the direction you drive it up the ramps determines whether that mass ends up in front of the axles or behind them.

Mini excavators carry their weight in the counterweight at the back of the house. Position that mass forward of the axles, lower the boom and bucket to the deck, and swing the house so the machine sits stable rather than leaving it turned at an angle.

Attachments count as separate cargo. A bucket or set of forks removed and laid on the deck changes the balance depending on where it lands.

How much difference does moving a machine actually make?

More than people expect, because it is a lever. On a trailer where the axles sit roughly 15 feet behind the coupler, shifting a 7,000-pound machine one foot forward moves a meaningful amount of weight onto the tongue.

That is why the practical method is to load, measure, and adjust rather than eyeball it once and assume. Mark the deck where a given machine sits correctly and you never have to solve it again for that combination.

How do you measure tongue weight without guessing?

A public scale is the most reliable option. Weigh the tow vehicle alone, then weigh the combination with the trailer coupled, and compare the readings on the truck’s axles. Tongue weight scales made for the purpose also work for lighter tongue loads.

Visual cues help but do not substitute. A tow vehicle squatting hard at the rear with the front end light is showing too much tongue weight or insufficient suspension for the load. A trailer that looks nose-high usually has too little.

What does a weight distribution hitch actually do?

It redistributes tongue weight across the tow vehicle’s front axle and the trailer axles using spring bars, which restores steering and braking feel on the front end and levels the combination.

What it does not do is add capacity or correct a load that is sitting too far back. A weight distribution hitch on a rearward-biased trailer still leaves you with a rearward-biased trailer. Anti-sway control is a related but separate function, and some hitches integrate it while others do not.

How many chains does the load actually need?

Federal cargo securement rules provide the baseline that commercial operators are held to, and they are a sensible standard for anyone. The aggregate working load limit of the tiedowns must be at least half the weight of the cargo being secured, and heavy equipment above a defined weight threshold generally requires a minimum of four tiedowns, with accessories such as buckets and booms secured separately.

Working load limit is not breaking strength. It is a rated fraction of it, stamped on the chain tag or hook, and it is the number that counts. Confirm current requirements through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules rather than relying on shop-floor rules of thumb.

Getting axle placement right when you order

Axle position, deck length, and tongue configuration all get decided before a trailer is built, and they determine how forgiving it will be to load. A trailer specified around the machine you actually own will sit correctly with that machine in a natural position rather than requiring you to park it awkwardly far forward every trip.
